Clean car programme falling short of goal
Article Abstract:
The US government will fail to build an inexpensive environmentally-friendly automobile by the year 2004 despite its efforts to help industry engineers design an innovative vehicle. The Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNGV), involving automobile manufacturers General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, requires extra funding to overcome technical difficulties. The project, which involves the National Research Council, was set up to design an family-sized automobile that can travel 80 miles to the gallon.

Scientists wary of weapons research agency
Article Abstract:
A National Nuclear Security Administration will be created in the US in Mar 2000 if, as anticipated, President Bill Clinton signs a defence authorization act which provides for its establishment. Many researchers at the three very large weapons laboratories welcome the creation of this agency, but scientists involved in non-weapons programmes in these laboratories fear that support for their work will gradually diminish as the laboratories concentrate on the new agency's goal of nuclear weapons research.

Congress warns nuclear labs of spy risk
Article Abstract:
US Department of Energy nuclear weapons laboratories are tightening controls on access by foreign scientists due to concerns by Congress about the lack of thorough vetting. There are many lab-to-lab collaborations on weapons issues, and scientists also work with the laboratories on non-weapons related work. The General Accounting Office (GAO) has reports of espionage activities against the labs.
