France urged to head 'Rubbiatron' efforts
Article Abstract:
France is being asked by a member of its National Assembly to back an international effort to develop Nobel prizewinner Carlo Rubbia's proposals for a safe nuclear reactor. Claude Birraux, who trained as a chemical engineer, believes that the ministry of research should investigate Rubbia's ideas before it makes a final decision on disposing of nuclear waste in 2006. The proposed accelerator would produce radioactive actinides by producing currents of protons that would bombard molten lead. The system would remain subcritical and could be rapidly shut down. CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics in Switzerland, has provided funding for Rubbia to develop his ideas.

Claims of hidden agenda on French waste
Article Abstract:
The government in France is planning to establish a deep storage centre and underground laboratories to study nuclear waste disposal in clay and granite localities. Critics believe that this shows that the government intends to dispose of nuclear waste in the future. The underground storage centre is likely to be established in Gard in the south, following scientific verification.

Head of French leukaemia inquiry quits after partisan remarks
Article Abstract:
The chairman of a commission probing allegations of a slight increase in cases of leukemia among children living near the nuclear reprocessing plant at La Hague, France, has resigned.
