Animal rights activist Cleveland Amory died on Oct 14, 1998, at the age of 81. He effectively advanced the cause of animals through his novels and non-fiction works. He founded the Fund for Animals in 1967 and the Texas-based sanctuary for abused animals, Black Beauty Ranch, in 1980.
