Space station faces research cuts to cover risk of Russian default
Article Abstract:
The US space agency NASA is to face reductions in funds in 2000, to cover the risk of a possible Russian default on delivering key parts of the station. Priority will be given to maintaining the launch schedule for large instruments and to building hardware for individual experiments. Research funding is expected to increase again in 2003, and Congress could add further funds when it takes up NASA's budget requests.

Environmental groups get Supreme Court boost on endangered species
Article Abstract:
The US Supreme Court has ruled that destruction of wildlife habitat is a type of harm to protected species and was thus prohibited by law. The decision taken in Babbitt vs Sweet Home Chapter of Communities for a Great Oregon has provided a legal basis to the Endangered Species Act which is to be reviewed by Congress in 1995. The National Academy of Sciences had strongly endorsed this act in May 1995.
