Clutch size and malaria resistance
Article Abstract:
Cost of egg-production in the great tit, Parus major, determine clutch size and there is a tradeoff between egg production and resistance to malaria. Females in an experimental group lay one egg more on average than those in a control group and have a 50% increased prevalence of the malarial parasite Plasmodium. Prevalence of Plasmodium in the control group is 20% and there is no change in malarial prevalence in males of both groups. Thus, the increased use of resources to produce more eggs decreases the amount of resources available to resist diseases and affects future reproduction.

Cinderella goes to the ball
Article Abstract:
Innate immunity has long been a neglected area of research, but there is growing excitement about innate immunity as a result of research into molecules called Toll-like receptors (TLRs). TLRs play an important role in triggering innate immune responses.

A toll for DNA vaccines
Article Abstract:
New research has identified the mammalian protein that triggers innate immune responses to bacterial DNA. It is thought the discovery may aid the development of DNA-based vaccines.
