Collapse of talks on safety of GMO trade
Article Abstract:
It has not proved possible to reach an agreement on a global protocol to control international trade in genetically modified organisms (GMOs). This is mainly because grain-exporting countries were unwilling to drop calls for the export of genetically modified commodities to take place without obtaining the permission of the importing country. Developing countries placed emphasis on the need for the socioeconomic impact of GMOs to be taken into consideration during any assessment of their environmental dangers.

Vote on growth hormones in meat sparks row with FAO
Article Abstract:
There is a difference of opinion between the European Commission and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on the import and use of meat grown using growth-promoting hormones. There is opposition to the European Union ban of hormone-enhanced meat from Codex, a body responsible for international food standards, and also from some EU member states. The UK and the FAO oppose the ban as there is no scientific basis for it.

Nirex chief expected to lose seat on UK's nuclear waste panel
Article Abstract:
Environmentalists are relieved that Michael Folger is likely to be denied a place on the Radioactive Waste Management Advisory Committee (RWMAC). Folger, chief executive of radioactive disposal company Nirex, is not an independent member of the committee, say Friends of the Earth activists. He has held a place on the RWMAC committee since 1991.
