Colony member recognition and xenophobia in the naked mole-rat
Article Abstract:
The ability of naked-mole rats (Heterocephalus glaber) to distinguish familiar and unfamiliar co-species and their response to intruders was investigated. The ability of Naked-mole rats to recognize colony members and aggressively discriminate against foreign conspecifics appeared to be distinct colony odor labels, contributed, distributed and learned by all colony members. Differences in the mixture of these odors provide genetically similar colonies with a unique odor label which persisted despite the control for exogenous cues.

Helping behaviour in facultatively eusocial hover wasps: an experimental test of the subfertility hypothesis
Article Abstract:
A study of hover wasps aims to assess whether females take on the role of helpers because they are unable to breed. The study forced wasps to nest alone, by leaving them on nests which had had other adult wasps removed. There were 19 remaining wasps, and 18 of these had developed characteristics such as ovaries that were normally reserved for dominants, and most were likely to have laid eggs. This indicates that subfertility is not the reason for some hover wasps becoming helpers.

Intracolony aggression in the eusocial naked mole-rat
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the influence which shoving by the dominant queen has on the suppression of reproduction in subordinate females living in a colony of naked mole-rats. The functions of shoving are discussed.
