Comments on predictability and overdifferencing in vigilance sequences
Article Abstract:
Gilbert Roberts's article on vigilance sequence, showing that the durations of inter-scan intervals (ISI) were not predictable from preceding intervals, draws unfavorable response. Use of differencing method for time series where sequences of ISI durations appear uncorrelated is inappropriate and unnecessary. Further, predictability or unpredictability is not directly dependent on autocorrelation or uncorrelation of the original time series of ISI durations. Data hardly provides evidence supporting the postulation of a behavioral mechanism that could lead to negative autocorrelation.

Predictability and chaos in bird vigilant behaviour
Article Abstract:
The vigilant behavior of two choughs, a purple sandpiper and two doves shows high short-term and rapidly declining predictability. This indicates low dimensional chaos underlying the timing of vigilance. The birds' vigilant behavior against predators is shown by their intermittent scanning of their proximate environment during feeding periods. In periodic or chaotic scanning, coordination reduces individual predictability and the time spent by a flock without any bird scanning.

The chi-squared statistic in ethology: use and misuse
Article Abstract:
The use of Pearson's chi-squared statistic for tests of significance is not suitable for all frequency-type data. The absence of independence between observations can result in an inflated chi-squared statistic or deflated chi-squared statistic. One should first determine that the mean and variance are equal to each other in each cellof a contingency table before initiating chi-squared and related tests.
