Communal nesting patterns in mice implicate MHC genes in kin recognition
Article Abstract:
Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) seems to play a role in kin recognition among mice. Nursing female mice generally nest in pairs or larger groups, nursing all pups indiscriminately. They tend to choose for their nest partners mice with shared alleles of MHC, probably sensing the kinship by odor. This study is the first to demonstrate the role of specific genes in a vertebrate's discrimination among individuals in a group, for the purpose of preferential treatment.

Role reversal in geomagnetism: What drives the erratic reversal of Earth's magnetic field? Simulations that allow for variations in heat flow at the core-mantle boundary now implicate events in the mantle
Article Abstract:
Glatzmaier and colleagues have looked at the effects of temperature anomalies in the mantle, by imposing heat-flow conditions that vary over the surface of the core-mantle boundary. A model using the best estimate of the current distribution of temperature anomalies in the mantle is also considered, based on links between temperature anomalies and lateral variations in elastic properties.

Female anti-male attack
Article Abstract:
The immune systems of females are influenced by the male-specific transplantation (H-Y) antigens that are encoded by the Smcy gene. This gene is detected on the Y chromosome part controlling immunity to H-Y. The major histocompatibility complex-restricted antigen recognition and thymic selection are characterized by H-Y response.
