When the electronics and technology company, NEC, set up the NEC Research Institute (NECI) in Princeton, New Jersey, its generous attitude towards research and funding attracted top academics. The current trend towards business-oriented research, however, means that NECI scientists are being pressurised into conduct research that is relevant to NEC and its profit margins.
