Comparative breeding ecology of Cooper's hawks in urban and exurban areas of southeastern Arizona
Article Abstract:
Research undertaken in southeastern Arizona into the breeding ecology and productivity of Cooper's hawks in urban and exurban areas has established that the main cause of mortality among free-ranging Cooper's hawks in urban areas is collisions, particularly with windows and vehicles. These hawks sometimes become aggressive in defending their nests, causing people to become frightened and possibly leading to the hawks being persecuted. The ability of Cooper's hawks to adapt to human activities and breed in landscapes affected by humans could be significant for the long-term survival of the species in areas where extensive development is taking place.

Multiscaled habitat selection by elegant trogons in southeastern Arizona
Article Abstract:
The elegant trogon is a neotropical bird found mainly in Latin America but it also occurs in southeastern Arizona where it is at the northernmost extension of its range. A new study examines habitat selection by the elegant trogon at multiple scales and relates it to reproductive success. Across all scales, elegant trogons were mainly found in oaks and sycamore trees in riparian areas, but finds no differences between nest sites used by successful and unsuccessful birds.
