Complex pathways in dissociative adsorption of oxygen on platinum
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that the chemisorption process of oxygen on platinum might be far more complex than implied by the Languir model. The use of a scanning tunnelling microscope shows that previously dissociated chemisorbed species in the area affect an oxygen molecule's dissociation probability. The adsorption mechanism has a dynamic heterogeneity which makes the adsorbate ordering kinetically limited. The kinetics of catalytic reactions carried out at high pressures and temperatures for industrial heterogeneous catalysis are probably also affected by this effect.
