Conformity to cultural norms of tool use in chimpanzees
Article Abstract:
A naturalistic foraging task called as 'Pan-pipes' is used to show that experimentally introduced technologies would spread within different ape communities. It is argued that evidence for imitation in apes comes largely from individuals that are 'enculturated' by close interactions with humans, shaping their attention in non-natural ways, whereas other apes may lack the social learning necessary for culture.
