Context-specific use suggests that bottlenose dolphin signature whistles are cohesion calls
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to determine whether signature whistles are used to maintain group cohesion among four captive bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus. The experiment was performed in a pool where no partitions were used. The dolphins were observed to produce a stereotyped signature whistle everytime each one got separated from the group. Results provide strong evidence that signature whistles are used to maintain group cohesion.
