Gene therapy research is spread across many disciplines and institutes at NIH
Article Abstract:
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) initiated research on human gene therapy in 1990 and by 1992 had several teams of intramural scientists pursuing possible uses of this new technique against disease. However, the NIH's Recombinant DNA Committee must approve any proposed trial of a gene therapy technique. NIH researchers are investigating gene therapies for cancer, AIDS, cardiovascular disease and hereditary diseases such as adenosine deaminase deficiency.
