The mackerel experiment
Article Abstract:
The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) was established in 1920 on the foundations of the then Throop University, to become the equivalent of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology of the West Coast. Today, Caltech remains small by choice, but has produced a total of 21 Nobel Laureates. Its faculty is also among the best paid in the world. In tune with its credentials for excellence in research, Caltech, in collaboration with MIT, is developing the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, a facility designed to observe cosmic events inaccessible to the electromagnetic spectrum.

Appetite for destruction
Article Abstract:
A new strain of Dactulosphaira vitifoliae, the phylloxera pathogen of grapes, is threatening California's wine industry. The new strain, called Biotype B, has been isolated in six counties. The estimated losses in the Napa and Sonoma counties alone will amount to more than $1-billion. The only feasible approach to controlling this disease is to replace current vines with Biotype B-resistant vines. Although the losses will be great, the situation can spur new research into the the control of this disease.
