Crash and burn
Article Abstract:
The Californian defense and aerospace industry were among those of the hardest hit during the last two years of the economic recession. The state is dealing with this by consolidating the industry's core areas, breaking down peripheral activities and selling off parts. These approaches are complemented by diversification, which is the only option in some operations which cannot be relocated. However, all of these strategies will require a change in culture, which must adjust to the cut-and-thrust atmosphere of the marketplace. In the end, the spirit that gave birth to the mighty Californian aerospace industry will be the same spirit that will save it.

Insurmountable opportunities
Article Abstract:
The current economic situation in California has affected the University of California (UC) in a way unprecedented in its history. UC VP Bill Baker stated that the current difficuties are worse than those experienced during the Great Depression. In a nutshell, the University just has too many students in a period of budget slashes. As a result, the university's much vaunted academic excellence is suffering. However, there are no shortages of ideas, and the adminstration is confident that the university will rise to the challenge as it always has in the past.

Can they do it again?
Article Abstract:
The financial year will probably end with California in debt by $2.1 billion. This will be compounded by a sharp decrease in revenues, federal budget cuts and cuts in local tax revenue. All of these problems come in the heels of a worsening immigration problem which is straining the state's resources to the bursting point. Projections for the entire decade indicate that there will be no significant improvement in the economic situation of California even up to the financial year 2001-2002.
