Critics attack hasty review of quake prediction efforts
Article Abstract:
In light of the Kobe disaster, an external review of Japan's earthquake prediction program has been carried out. The internal review, by the earthquake prediction sub-committee of the Geodetic Council, has been criticised for not making the public aware of the present status and limitations of the earthquake prediction program. The report of the external review has suggested collection of all earthquake data, including that for microearthquakes, to be done by Japan's Meteorological Agency and further study of faults like the one that caused the Kobe disaster.

Earthquake exposes gaps in seismic network
Article Abstract:
The recent earthquake and subsequent tsunamis in Japan highlight the region's weak earthquake observation and prediction network. While the Tokyo area boasts 133 observation instruments, the Japan Sea side of Hokkaido has only nine in 400 km of coast. Researchers give the area little attention despite the fault zone's six major temblors since 1940. Japan now may keep a closer eye on it, but the byzantine earthquake prediction program is likely to change little.
