Cross-fostering New Zealand's black stilt
Article Abstract:
Experiments with black stilts (imantopus novaezelandiae) in New Zealand indicate that cross-fostering does not increase the population of the birds. Egg production is regulated through multiple clutching and cross fostering to pied stilts, resulting in an increase of young black stilts. This has no positive effect on the breeding population of black stilt because the hybrid stilts migrate with their foster parents and do not return to breed.
