Crystals with a light
Article Abstract:
Physicists' ability to use lasers to control the quantized movements of atoms in delicate potential wells was further enhanced by two recent experiments. The first experiment, carried out P. Verkerk and colleagues at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris, gauged the absorption spectrum of a weak laser beam projected through caesium atoms. The second experiment, conducted by P.S. Jessen and colleagues at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, involved using an optical heterodyne technique to examine the fluorescent light emitted by rubidium atoms.

Colder, yet colder atoms
Article Abstract:
A Bose-Einstein condensation of 20,000 atoms at 200 nanokelvin and at a density of 6 x 10 to the tenth power per centimeter cube, can be possible by two oppositely directed current coils. In the cooling technique, the average energy of the atoms are decreased by allowing the highly energetic atoms to escape. The evaporative cooling is possible by inducing a radio-frequency field that causes transition of atoms having the highest potential energy to an untrapped state.

Logic gateway
Article Abstract:
There are two groups, which have used pairs of trapped ions and created logic gates and both the groupsE focus on building a large working quantum computer. As components of quantum computer, these gates have the potential to form of a scaled-up, workable system.
