Current limits to wire technology
Article Abstract:
High-temperature superconductors (HTS) are extremely complex materials, presenting serious obstacles to the development of wires, although many of the problems have been resolved. Cai and colleagues have studied single filaments extracted from BiSrCaCuO (BSCCO) tape to examine barriers to current flow. They show that many filaments are not active due to the intrusion of cracks from the tape edges, and there are signs of c-axis conduction, suggesting the existence of local barriers. Filaments cracks and c-axis texture could be improved by refinements in thermo-mechanical processing.

Monochromatic electron emission from the macroscopic quantum state of a superconductor
Article Abstract:
The macroscopic quantum state of a superconductor can coherently extend over large distances, resulting in electrons remaining coherent in phase and able to interfere. This provides the basis of superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs). Monochromatic electrons have been seen tunnelling from a superconductor to a normal metal, leading to currents that can be used to investigated the dynamics of atoms and molecules.

Coherent transfer of Cooper pairs by a movable grain
Article Abstract:
Research is presented describing the transfer of Cooper-pair boxes, or nanometre-sized superconducting grains, that are used in superconducting circuits that use Josephson junctions. A moveable Cooper-pair box moving occasionally between two remote superconducting electrodes can facilitate Josephson coupling, thus allowing the Cooper pairs to transfer between the electrodes.
