Daily life in the city of death
Article Abstract:
Karachi, Pakistan's port city and biggest commercial center, is embroiled in the civil war between the Mohajir Qaumi Movement (MQM), government and other nationalist groups leading to loss of precious lives. The talks between the MQM and the government has not led to any concrete results. Mohajirs are the Urdu speaking people who migrated from India and settled in Karachi after the 1947 independence. The main cause of the conflict is the denial of proportional employment and educational opportunities to the Mohajirs. This has also affected the scientific research work in Karachi due to diversion of funds.

Row erupts over evacuation plans for Mount Vesuvius
Article Abstract:
The suggestion by members of an Italian government commission to evacuate 600,000 people to safer places, before the probable eruption of Mount Vesuvius, created controversies. According to the proposed plans, the volcano eruption can be predicted 20 days in advance. Environmentalists disagree with the plan as accurate volcanic predictions are difficult. The government needs to concentrate more on disaster management and risk communication.
