Deadly relic of the Great War
Article Abstract:
A range of experiments were undertaken on a piece of sugar within which was embedded a sealed glass capillary tube containing anthrax bacilli. The sugar, discovered in the archive collection of a police museum in Trondheim, Norway, was found in the luggage of Finnish independence activist Baron Otto Karl von Rosen when he was arrested in Jan 1917. It is assumed that he intended to use it against reindeer used for sledging British arms through northern Norway. The presence of B. anthracis in the specimen was confirmed by both culture and polymerase chain reaction.

Y-chromosome variation in great apes
Article Abstract:
The Y chromosome in humans and great apes display low levels of variation. While this finding is consistent with selective pressure on the ZFY gene or linked loci, it contrasts sharply with high variation levels found in the mitochondrial DNA sequences of the same species. The difference is generally attributed to a common ancestor, a group of males in the population, or selective sweeps that arrange the sequences of linked genes on the Y chromosome's nonrecombining component.

Trifling variation in truffles
Article Abstract:
The black truffle, Tuber melanosporum, is one of ten species of European truffle, some of which are valued for their taste and smell. The black truffle is found in France, Spain and Italy, and its taste and smell differs depending upon its location. A new study investigates the geographical range and genetic diversity of black truffles to discover reasons for their organoleptic variations. It is concluded that such differences are caused by environmental differences.
