Deal on toxicity law fails to appease
Article Abstract:
The controversial law, known as Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals (REACH), raises the standards for safety testing of chemicals and puts full responsibility for safety assurance in the hands of industry. REACH is the focus of intense lobbying, particularly by industry, which argues that it would be too expensive, and by animal-rights supporters, who complain that the testing would cost too many animal lives.

Junior biologists score partial victory over lab conditions
Article Abstract:
Junior biologists made a joint complaint against a professor, Axel Meyer about their alleged mistreatment in a lab at the University of Konstanz, Germany. The University did an internal investigation and the committee charged with investigating the researcher's claims concluded that the professor was not concerned about the welfare of the young scientists in his lab.
