Deer destiny determined by density
Article Abstract:
New light has been shed on the Trivers-Willard hypothesis, which states that, in polygynous mammalian societies, mothers in good health should produce sons, while mothers in poor health should produce daughters. This research may also assist in explaining the inconsistency among previous studies of mammalian sex ratios. It was found that, as the population density of red deer has risen on areas of the island of Rum where culling is not permitted, so the tendency of high-ranking females to produce sons has vanished.

George Brown (1920-99): Political champion of science in the United States
Article Abstract:
George Brown a Democrat congressman from California was often known as the 'statesman of science' and 'Mr science'. In 1990 he chaired the Science Committee of the House of Representatives, saving the space station from political oblivion on many occasions. Brown was an enthusiast for science and often attacked President Bill Clinton over what he regarded as an inexcusable neglect of science. He was also a strong supporter of civil rights legislation.

Phonon density of states and negative thermal expansion in ZrW(sub2)O(sub8)
Article Abstract:
The negative thermal expansion (NTE) phenomenon was revealed in ZrW(sub2)O(sub8) in 1968. The material is currently of interest with regard to NTE as the magnitude of the effect is relatively high, the NTE effect is isotropic and the temperature range is large. Neutron-scattering measurements of ZrW(sub2)O(sub8) are reported, enabling the study of its phonon spectrum and find the energy scale for lattice motions controlling NTE.
