Demand curves, deprivation and welfare: a reply to Dawkins
Article Abstract:
The nature of suffering and the use of economic tools adopted in a study for assessing animal suffering and welfare is valid and appropriate. The potential for suffering implied in the study is applicable because it only considers situations when the animal is deprived of the possibility of choosing an action whose demand curve has been measured. The use of a slope, elasticity and area under the demand curve to measure welfare is correct because the nature of deprivation used in the study is a result of completely preventing an animal's desired activity.

Multiple patterns of parental care
Article Abstract:
Reasons for the existence of multiple patterns of parental care in animals are considered. The mixed-strategy behavior, time dependent behavior and quality differences between individuals are formed into a basic framework investigated using a two stage game-theoretical model. The importance of including feedback between parental care decisions and the probability that a deserting individual would find a new mate is emphasized.

Parental effort and paternity
Article Abstract:
The relationship between paternity and optimal parental effort is investigated. It is suggested that previous studies have not confirmed a discontinuous relationship between effort and paternity. It is also shown that existing data on dunnocks and tree swallows show a flat effort-paternity function, thus making any conclusion about the form of the relationship between parental effort and offspring survival premature.
