Detachment fronts and the onset of dynamic friction
Article Abstract:
The dynamics between two brittle acrylic (polymethyl-methacrylate, PMMA) blocks that are separated by a rough interface and consisting of discrete randomly distributed microcontacts are studied. The measurements suggest that a slow detachment front always occur as isolated events or in combination with more rapid modes and significant amount of slip is caused due to the slow fronts.

Close-up on cracks
Article Abstract:
Different materials cope with the mathematical singularity at the tip of a crack and as a crack becomes infinitely sharp, it gives rise to infinite stresses. Thus cracks in a material play a key role as stress enhancers.

Propagating solitary waves along a rapidly moving crack front
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the movement of tensile cracks in a brittle material and the formation of planar surfaces with moving edges. The dynamics of the cracks and the formation of front waves are discussed.
