Differences in prey selection and behaviour during self-feeding and chick provisioning in rhinoceros auklets
Article Abstract:
Cerorhinca monocerata, the rhinocerous auklet, was studied to assess whether parents gathered different items of prey to feed their young than to feed themselves. Adults were found to feed themselves on smaller fish than the fish they provided for their young. They also fished at different times for themselves, prior to 1600 hours, catching fish for their young after 1600 hours. They tended to feed themselves diving in flocks, but fished alone to collect prey for their young.

Begging tactics of nestling yellow-headed blackbirds, Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus, in relation to need
Article Abstract:
A study of the yellow-headed blackbird shows that a relationship exists between their begging behavior and the long-term need for food. Begging depends on gender and body condition. The control of hunger level shows that males and weak chicks beg more than females and stronger chicks. Chicks also beg more when paired with larger nestmates. Competition among siblings increases begging levels. Vocal begging may indicate both long-term needs and short-term hunger levels.

The relationship between previous meal size and begging vocalizations of nestling rhinoceros auklets, Cerorhinca monocerata
Article Abstract:
An experiment exploring the relationship between previous meal size and begging vocalizations of nestling rhinoceros auklets, Cerohinca monocerata, was conducted. Results indicate that there is no correlation between begging vocalizations and previous meal size. Evidence indicates that parent auklets assess the needs of the infant in the burrow. Results suggest that the relationship between previous meal size and begging vocalization may be complex.
