Dominant males punish helpers for temporary defection in superb fairy-wrens
Article Abstract:
An experiment exploring the punishment behavior of dominant male superb fairy wrens, Malurus cyaneus, on helper superb fairy wrens who have temporarily defected or been lax in their duties was conducted. Results indicate that the helper is either passively accepted back into the group or is harassed by the dominant male leading to an eventual acceptance. Agression resulted only during feritlization and incubation periods of females and during the nestling phase of the year.
