Marine natural products are attractive sources for new antibiotics because they are mostly secondary metabolites and could be re-engineered to help our fight against infectious disease. The Madrid-based biotech company PharmaMar has sought cancer drugs in marine natural products by investigating compounds found by academics and it has two compounds in preclinical trials for cancer.

Traditional chemotherapy kills tumor cells directly and some newer drugs work instead by cutting the tumor's blood supply. Some tumors develop resistance to a particular drug and hence, the efforts to identify targets that are not prone to developing resistance continue.

The use of drug 17-AAG in anticancer therapy to target tumour heat-shock protein 90 (Hsp 90), which regulate many signaling pathways in cancer cells, is discussed. The mechanism of action of 17-AAG to Hsp90 is described.
