DuPont opens up access to genetics tool
Article Abstract:
DuPont Pharmaceuticals Co., the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Jackson Laboratory have reached an agreement that will give researchers access to the powerful genetics tool Cre-loxP. The patent on the technology, which allows the manipulation of mouse genes and which has been held by DuPont, forbade researchers using Cre-lox mice to share them with associates unless a licensing agreement had been signed. The NIH is hoping that the initiative will prompt other biotechnology companies to make their technologies more readily available.

Study discloses financial interests behind papers
Article Abstract:
A new study that reviewed 789 original papers published by academics based in Massachusettes found that 34% of the lead authors had a financial interest in the research they published. Financial interest was gauged in terms of the author's involvement in a patent application related to the published research, or close association with an organization with commercial interests related to the research.
