European grants to face ethics scrutiny
Article Abstract:
The European Union may consider the ethical aspects of life science research proposals prior to awarding grants under its Framework programme due to commence at end-1998. The programme already requires research to meet basic ethical principles. Human cloning and human germline gene therapy will not be given research funding. The Group of Advisers on the Ethics of Biotechnology believes the moral and social effects of research should be taken into account, while safety issues should be deemed more important than scientific freedom.

WHO's bioethics code likely to stir debate
Article Abstract:
It is likely that a set of bioethics principles being created by the World Health Organization will attract controversy. The guidelines, which include a call for all research results from human genome projects to be made public, will probably be promulgated as an international declaration in the longer term. A number of scientists have been critical of elements of the guidelines, including the statement that experiments in developing countries should be approved by ethical bodies in those countries.

'Bioethics needs better input from public'
Article Abstract:
A one day conference in Paris, attended by top scientists, legal experts and politicians, looked at the different approaches of France and Britain to resolving bioethical isues, and ways of reaching international agreement. Most delegates agreed that restricting debate on scientific advances affecting society to expert committees was outdated, and that decision-making should be more open to improve public confidence.
