South American science at a crossroads
Article Abstract:
The status of scientists and other academics in South America has been uncertain for many years because of political instability and fluctuations in the region's economic fortunes. However, there now seem to be better prospects for South America playing an effective role in global scientific activity. Developments are already taking place that will boost the region's science base. These include the creation of a new National Agency for the Promotion of Science and Technology in Argentina.

US public puts faith in science, but still lacks understanding
Article Abstract:
Popular understanding basic scientific concepts is still weak although public interest in science and technology is at an all time peak in the US, according to survey for the National Science Foundation (NSF). The survey also found that Americans are more positive about the impact of science and technology than Europeans or Japanese. It showed that the majority of the public cannot distinguish between science and technology.
