Selection of wolf dens in relation to winter territories in northeastern Minnesota
Article Abstract:
Locations of wolf (Canus lupus) dens in northeastern Minnesota were analyzed in relation to winter territories. Wolves do not locate the den centrally in relatively small territories, but they tend to do so in large territories. Minimizing traveling distances from and to the den influences selection of den location in large territories. Denning wolves tend to avoid areas where influence by adjacent packs is more likely. The process of selecting a den location within the territory is a function of tradition, availability of food resources and influence of adjacent packs.
