Ecological consequences of alternative gill net fisheries for Nile perch in Lake Victoria
Article Abstract:
Bioenergetics modeling predicts the effect of gill net mesh size restrictions on Nile perch (Lates cf. niloticus) harvest and predation rates in Lake Victoria. A minimum size of five inches would lower cannibalism and predation by Nile perch by up to 44% while decreasing Nile perch yields by only about 10%. If fishers use only the smallest gill nets, however, the decrease in predation would be greater, but the harvest of Nile perch would also decrease by about 35%.

Fish faunal resurgence in Lake Nabugabo, East Africa
Article Abstract:
Annual transects in inshore and offshore waters of exposed and wetland habitats have been used in a multiyear study to document the pattern of resurgence. The importance of refugia in providing the seeds of resurgence is demonstrated by the pattern of faunal loss and recovery in Lake Nabugabo and provides a model with which to understand some changes in Lake Victoria.

Forest restoration in abandoned agricultural land: a case study from East Africa
Article Abstract:
Research on natural reforestation of abandoned agricultural land can indicate which human reforestation techniques are most effective. A study of abandoned agricultural land in Uganda is described.
