Edward M. Purcell (1912-1997)
Article Abstract:
The 1952 physics Nobel prize winner Edward Mills Purcell died from respiratory failure on March 7, 1997 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Purcell, together with Felix Bloch had first observed the transition occurring between nuclear spin levels causing the magnetic resonance absorption of hydrogen nuclei in a condensed solid matter such as paraffin. Prior to this, he co-discovered with Harold I. Ewan another consequence of the hydrogen nuclear spin: that the hydrogen atom's hyperfine transition at 1,420 mega Hertz corresponds to the microwave emission from its atomic counterpart in the Milky Way.

Yulii Khariton (1904-96): physicist, instrumental in developing Soviet nuclear weapons
Article Abstract:
Physicist Yulii Khariton played a key role in the development of Soviet nuclear weapons as the scientific director of Arzamas-16 for more than 40 years. He first became involved in defense-related research after a visit to Germany, where he saw for himself the volatile political situation. Upon returning to Leningrad, he established a laboratory for the study of explosives. Despite his role in Soviet history, Khariton remained quiet and unassuming. Khariton passed away on Dec 19, 1996 at the age of 92.
