Transcription factor GATA-3 is required for development of the T-cell lineage
Article Abstract:
The zinc-finger transcription factor GATA-3, expressed in the haematopoietic cells, is important for the early development of thymocytes and T cells. The murine embryonic stem cells with GATA-3 gene mutations are able to develop the erythroid, myelomonocytic and B cell lineages. However, they fail to develop the thymocytes and mature peripheral T cells. The T-cells with the mutated GATA-3 genes fail to differentiate before the first double-negative thymocyte development stage. This stops the GATA mutated genes from contributing to the development of the double-negative thymocyte cells.

Positional cloning of a global regulator of anterior-posterior patterning in mice
Article Abstract:
The positional cloning of a mouse mutation for embryonic ectoderm development (eed) provides evidence of regulation of the anterior-posterior (A-P) patterning throughout embryogenesis. Mutants homozygous for a null allele of eed show A-P disrupted patterning of the primitive streak during gastrulation. Mutant embryos are characterized by the absence of node, notochord/somites, and neural induction. Extra embryonic mesoderm is abundant while anterior structures are absent. Hypomorphic eed mutated mice display posterior transformations along the axial skeleton.

Silberblick/Wnt11 mediates convergent extension movements during zebrafish gastrulation
Article Abstract:
Understanding of genes which coordinate cell movement has been advanced by a study in zebrafish showing involvement of the silberblick (slb) locus in gastrulation. Slb encodes Wnt11, previously suggested to affect cell movement, and both slb and Wnt11 activity are needed for correct convergent extension movements during gastrulation.
