Efects of skirting on processing characteristics of targhee wool
Article Abstract:
Skirting is the process of separating lines of wool intended for different uses. The effect of this process on wool characteristics was evaluated in wool from Targhee ewes. Nonskirted fleece, fleece without bellies and topknots and skirted fleece were examined to determine the effect of skirting on processing characteristics. Skirting did not affect wool fiber diameters. On the other hand, overall processing qualities, such as yield, length, noilage and color, were improved by skirting. The process also decreased top fiber percentage. The enhancement of processing characteristics makes skirting a desirable practice in shearing.

Estimation of genetic parameters for wool fiber diameter measures
Article Abstract:
Wool samples, side and britch, were collected from 385 western white-faced ewes produced by 50 sires being managed at two separate locales. Hereditary estimates as well as genetic, phenotypic, and environmental correlations were derived with paternal half-sib analysis. Location had a significant effect on side diameter, side and britch diameter difference, and clean fleece weight but not on britch and core diameters. Heritability was highest with britch diameter followed by core and side diameters and likewise with side and britch diameter difference.
