Effect of the 1999 solar eclipse on atomic clocks
Article Abstract:
The solar eclipse over central Europe on Aug 11, 1999, does not seem to have produced any anomalous changes in the relative rates of three types of atomic clocks, based on the ground-state hyperfine transitions of hydrogen, rubidium and caesium. This finding goes against the view that solar eclipses have an unusual impact on the behaviour of atomic clocks and pendulums. Four atomic clocks were compared during the solar eclipse, with researchers recording variations in temperature, power lines and barometric pressure. External light intensity was recorded to verify synchronization of the data with the eclipse.

A frequency comb in the extreme ultraviolet
Article Abstract:
Intra-cavity high harmonic generation in the extreme ultraviolet, which promises to lead to another joint frontier of precision spectroscopy and ultrafast science, is demonstrated. Coherent extreme ultraviolet radiation is generated at a repetition frequency of more than 100 MHz.

Light-insensitive optical clock
Article Abstract:
The latest innovations in timekeeping, which can help to improve technologies, such as satellite navigation and broadband network synchronization are presented. Optical clocks are predicted to keep time within a fractional uncertainity of 10(super -18).
