Effect of water temperature on wild turkey metabolism
Article Abstract:
Starvation and malnutrition have a substantial effect on wild turkey populations during hard winters and knowledge of the effects of such weather on energy requirements is essential for wildlife management. A new study in Minnesota uses indirect calorimetry to assess the effect of winter air temperature on the metabolic rate of wild turkeys. It is demonstrated that a 5 deg C difference in air temperature produces a recognizable change in the metabolism of wild turkeys and suggests that turkeys need increased food consumption to survive cold winters.

Association of ring-necked pheasant, gray partridge, and meadowlark abundance to Conservation Reserve Program grasslands
Article Abstract:
The correlation between the amount of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) habitat in 15 agricultural landscapes and relative abundance of ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus), gray partridge (Perdix perdix), and meadowlarks (Stumella spp.) in south-central Minnesota was quantified. It was found that the transformation of cropland to CRP grasslands in intensively cultivated landscapes is connected with increased population indices of pheasants and meadowlarks, but not partridges.

Analysis of covariance models for data from observational field studies
Article Abstract:
The general features of the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) models that are effective for the analysis of data from observational studies are described. ANCOVA models have clarified important ecological relationships and wildlife management issues.
