Complex burrows of the mud shrimp Callianassa truncata and their geochemical impact in the sea bed
Article Abstract:
In situ analysis from a sediment observatory shows that the 2 cm long mud shrimp, Callianassa truncata, makes unique burrows with complex architecture and function. The burrows influence the whole sedimentology and geochemistry of the sea bed. The mounds, funnels and first gallery of the open burrow system activate a hydrodynamic water exchange in the upper sediment layer. The biopumping of dissolved oxygen and the transport of detrital particles down to 60-80 cm sediment depths accelerates the organic matter degradation.

Cycliophora is a new phylum with affinities to Entoprocta and Ectoprocta
Article Abstract:
The mouthparts of the Norway lobster have colonies of Symbion pandora, an acoelomate metazoan, that appears to belong to a new phylum, Cycliophora. The metazoan produces three motile stages all of which are short-lived. The characteristics of Cycliophora are dwarf males, a chordoid larva, metagenesis in the life cycle, and a ciliated mouth ring. The structure and function of the cilia indicate a position in Protostomia. The inner budding and brooding of larvae are similar to Entoprocta and Ectoprocta in some ways.

Ocean-ridge basalts with convergent-margin geochemical affinities from the Chile Ridge
Article Abstract:
Analyses of the mid-ocean-ridge basalts from the Chile Ridge with the aid of trace-element signatures suggest the variations in basalt composition and fractionation due to contaminations from marine sediments from nearby subduction zones. These studies reveal the volcanic nature of the basalts and suggest a correlation between ridge subduction and ophiolite obduction. The importance of tracer elements in identifying the origin of ophiolitic rocks is highlighted by this study.
