Effects of fescue toxicosis on reproduction in livestock
Article Abstract:
The effects of fescue toxicosis on livestock reproduction are reviewed. Prolonged gestation, abortions, dystocia, thickened placentas and stillbirths are some of the reproductive effects of fungus ingestion. Other effects are increased susceptibility to heat stress, light intolerance and decreased milk production. The ergot alkaloids produced by the fungus appear to be the primary toxins involved. Endocrine imbalances also play a role in the manifestations of the syndrome. Pretreatment with compounds that inhibit the activity of these toxins may prevent the occurrence of reproductive problems.

Mycotoxins and reproduction in domestic livestock
Article Abstract:
The effects of mycotoxins on the reproduction of domestic livestock are evaluated. Mold contamination of animal feed is already being studied, but many mycotoxins remain unaffected by mold inhibitors. Aflatoxin, ochratoxin, ergot, doexynivalenol and zearalenone are the five most significant mycotoxins in North America. Of these, zearalenone is the most important, as it possesses estrogenic activity. Although mycotoxins can be detected by laboratory studies, field techniques which will allow detection on farms and grain elevators would allow more effective monitoring.
