Eighteen-ninety-seven and all that
Article Abstract:
A compendium of commendable scientific discoveries made in centennials and sesquicentennials and so on back to 1247 is presented. The anniversaries to celebrate in 1997 range from the discovery of electrons by Joseph J. Thompson in 1897, the invention of the flute, the discovery of the mountains of the moon, the artificial manufacture of indigo, caffeine and alcohol and the introduction of the dumdum bullet. Also discovered a hundred years ago are the botulism bacillus, the role of rat fleas in bubonic plague epidemics and the role of Anopheles mosquitoes in the transmission of malaria.
