Elephants today and tomorrow: a perspective from Kenya
Article Abstract:
Until mid-1989 there was a rampant illegal elephant ivory trade in Kenya. On Jul 18, 1989 Kenya's president, H.E. Daniel Arap Moi, publicly burned several thousand confiscated tusks worth about $3 million. Broadcast on international television, this led to an international ban on the ivory trade and a fall in the price of ivory. This event also brought the plight of elephants in Africa to the attention of the developed world. Donations from private sources and governmental agencies became available to help enforce laws against poaching. Combined, the effect was essentially to eliminate elephant poaching in Kenya.

Letter from Kenya
Article Abstract:
Wildlife Conservation Society's (WCS) African Conservation Center director Helen Gichohi believes conservationists must address human issues concerning wildlife located outside parks. People have been hostile towards some wildlife protection policies and their needs must be addressed before truly effective measures can take place. Gichohi's determination to be a part of WCS's Kenya organization was rewarded when she became the director's assistant and later replaced the director several years later.
