Elk habitat selection on the Clearwater National Forest, Idaho
Article Abstract:
The patterns of habitat selection of elk in northcentral Idaho during 1986-1990 were studied. Elk shifted from using a high proportion of shrub and open timber habitats from spring to fall. Elk in areas with roads used habitats with greater canopy cover. Bulls tended to use higher proportions of lower slopes and stream bottoms than did cows during the summer and steeper areas during fall. Yearling bulls tended to select habitats in proportion to availability.

Mule deer survival among adjacent populations in southwest Idaho
Article Abstract:
Survival and cause-specific mortality of mule deer on 3 distinct winter ranges in southwest Idaho from the year 1992 to 1997 was investigated to identify demographic variation and potential limiting factors based on a sample of 447 radiocollared deer. During winters of the years 1995-1996 and 1996-1997, overwinter fawn mortality was modeled based on early winter mass, sex, activity, and habitat use variables.

Elk mortality in the clearwater drainage of northcentral Idaho
Article Abstract:
Radio telemetry was used to monitor 121 elks (cervus elaphus) in the forested habitats of northcentral Idaho during 1986-91 to estimate their mortality rates. Mortality rates were lower in places which had broken terrain, while road and hunter densities increased the mortality of the elks. Hunting is the primary cause of death in elks.
