End of the line in sight for FDA?
Article Abstract:
Congressional Republicans' dissatisfaction with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is mainly due to the bureaucratic functioning of the agency. Frequently, suggestions for dissolving the agency have arisen but analysts feel that this may not be possible because of some of the indispensable duties of the FDA, such as maintaining the quality and safety of drugs. The need for amending some of the terms and conditions for drug approval is recognized but cannot be done by legislation but rather supports the need for the FDA.

US panel split on endocrine disruptors...
Article Abstract:
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is to assess the impact of 15,000 chemicals as potential endocrine disruptors, but critics argue that there is a lack of proper independent scientific advice. The National Research Council (NRC) is issuing a report of the topic which has been delayed and may not appear until 1999. The NRC panel is divided on the issue of endocrine disruption, and its report was intended to provide the base for the EPA assessment process.

Plant scientists want focus on the best and brightest
Article Abstract:
A geneticist at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia suggests that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) should be more like the National Institutes of Health (NIH), funding the best research, rather than research on economically useful plants. Support for research and development at the USDA has fallen to $1.2 billion, and support for basic research has also fallen.
