Transition from dome-forming to plinian eruptive styles controlled by H20 and CI degassing
Article Abstract:
The eruption at Mt. Pelee, in the West Indies, which occurred 650 years ago, was unusual because a dome-forming style of eruption changed to plinian, or pumice, activity in a short time-span. Normally the eruption style is from pumice to dome-forming. Explosions near to the surface at Mt Pelee produced two peleean pyroclastic flows and then pumice flows and fallouts followed. Rising magma and its interaction with hydrothermal fluids may be important in determining which style of eruption occurs.

Remote prospects
Article Abstract:
Love and colleagues and Francis and colleagues have demonstrated advanced distance sensing of gas ratios in volcanic plumes, using Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) near Popocatepetl, Mexico, and Etna, Italy. Passive remote sensing using FTIR in the field is shown to be feasible and there is also potential to improve scientific knowledge of the SO(sub2) flux measurements by COSPEC.
