End of the road for poliomyelitis?
Article Abstract:
There seems to be a real prospect that poliomyelitis, one of the infectious scourges of the past half century, may well be eliminated early in the next century, perhaps even sooner, according to World Health Organization. Part of the difficulty in finding vaccines is the liability incurred by pharmaceutical companies and the knowledge that a successful vaccine will ultimately make itself commercial worthless. Genetic engineering may provide some new, less expensive techniques for preventing diseases through synthetic peptide-mimics of microorganisms' antigenic properties, but the effectiveness of this technique is not yet confirmed.

Yielding under the strain
Article Abstract:
Prion, a modified, pathogenic form of a constitutive host protein, responsible for transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, is believed to replicate by converting normal pathogenic forms into duplicates of itself. This theory has been demonstrated in molecular terms with the isolation of the host protein, PrP(super C) and its modified form PrP(super Sc) gene. The strain of prions in mice homozygous for the single polypeptide is discussed.

In search of a cure for CJD
Article Abstract:
Issues are presented concerning the research being carried out by scientists searching for a cure for variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The difficulty of diagnosing the disease before significant damage is done to the brain is discussed.
