Energetic constraints on the diet of terrestrial carnivores
Article Abstract:
A review of the most common live prey in carnivore diets indicates that the maximum size that can be sustained on an invertebrate diet is around 21.5 kg. This is the reason for the general absence of medium to large carnivores feeding on very small prey. This research supports the hypothesis that large carnivores are a separate group, rather than merely a scaled-up version of a small carnivore. Energetic limitations may be significant for understanding the vulnerability of large carnivores.

An index of intactness
Article Abstract:
Around 188 countries in 2002 committed themselves to achieve the target of reducing the rate of biodiversity loss at the global, regional, and national level by 2010. In view to achieve the target, many data sets are exploited to provide measures of forest areas, protected area coverage, and trends in the abundance of certain species.

A biodiversity intactness index
Article Abstract:
A biodiversity intactness index (BII) is proposed for assessing progress towards the target of reducing the rate of biodiversity loss by 2010. The BII score in the year 2000 is about 84%, which means averaged across all plant and vertebrate species in the region and populations have declined to 84% of their presumed pre-modern levels.
