Energy traps in atomic nuclei
Article Abstract:
The reasons for the existence of nuclear isomers and what limits their existence, is addressed. Nuclear isomers provide a type of energy storage. Beta-decaying radioactive nuclei can store MeV energies, but nuclear isomers often decay electromagnetically, through gamma-ray emission or by internal conversion. MeV isomers have potential to release significant quantities of energy and the de-excitation of the 2.4-MeV, 31-year isomer in Hf is an encouraging advance.

The complex nature of superconductivity in MgB2 as revealed by the reduced total isotope effect
Article Abstract:
Research is presented describing the complexity of superconductive magnesium diboride, or MgB2, which is shown through the small but measurable total isotope effect. MgB2 is a non-copper-oxide material that becomes a superconductor at 39K, the highest known transition temperature for a bulk material of this type.

Doubly magic nickel
Article Abstract:
A new isotope of nickel, nickel-48 has been created. It is made up of 28 protons and 20 neutrons, representing the most severe shortage of neutrons for known isotopes.
